What every bass fisherman must know about bass fishing rigs

When most people think of bass fishing, bass fishing rigs are one of the last things to come to mind.  Instead things like plastic worms, the “jig and pig”, crank baits, and top water fishing come to mind.  While all of these things should come to mind when you think about bass fishing, bass fishing rigs should come to mind as well.

When you put the artificial worm higher on the line then you call it the Carolina rig.  The Carolina jig will also work well if it is utilized in conjunction with some types of lures like crankbaits and others like them.  This is one of the most popular rigs, as it keeps your lure from settling to the bottom.

In the beginning of bass fishing the plastic bait rig that they used was called the Texas rig.  It’s a user friendly rig and leads to more bass catches than any other fishing bait.  For fishing both smallmouth and largemouth bass with artificial bait the Texas Rig is a staple set up.    Have you ever tried a Texas rig? You get a plastic bait that is soft, put a small weight above it, put a hook inside the worm’s head and then put it into the bait. This rig makes for less weeding and for better bass catches.   To allow the weight to slide freely up and down the line the line is simply threaded through the bullet weight.

The Texas Rig and the Carolina Rig are fished in much the same way.  Although it is no less effective when used in the right conditions the Texas Rig is more simple than the Carolina Rig.   Since the fake worm is tied onto the line about twelve inches, no more than twenty four inches away from the weight then you can call it a Carolina rig.   The Carolina rig is just a little more difficult than the Texas rig.

Which of these rigs is best for your conditions?  All of them and none of the would probably be the honest answer.   Any good fisherman can tell you that spots can change, and you must change your bait in response.
